GSMA TAC Allocation and IMEI Programming Rules for Device Brand Owners and Manufacturers

The Type Allocation Code (TAC) serves as a crucial identifier for all device types capable of connecting to a mobile wireless network, encompassing a wide range of devices such as IoT devices, payment terminals, and connected vehicles. This 8-digit number constitutes the initial segment of the 15-digit International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI), which plays a pivotal role in uniquely identifying each individual connected device. By assigning a distinct TAC to each device, they can be easily recognized and tracked globally, facilitating seamless transportation and operation across various regions and networks.

TAC/IMEI facilitates tax collection, global mobile network operation, and the identification of counterfeit or stolen devices, aiding governments, users, and authorities alike.

Who provides TAC?

The GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications Association) is the sole entity authorized by 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) to allocate Type Allocation Code (TAC) for all GSM mobile device identities worldwide. This allocation is facilitated through appointed reporting bodies. The GSMA ensures that TAC allocation adheres to standards, industry practices, and global regulatory requirements.

TAC IMEI Needs for devices : Mobile /  Feature Phone, Smartphone, Tablet, IoT Device, Wearable, Dongle, Modem, WLAN Router Etc.
